RUEBEN CHAPMAN (86048)by 1787 and his wife RHODA PECK and their first two children, LEVI and TRIPHENA, had moved from Connecticut to Cavendish, Windsor, VT. Cavendish lies in the valley of the Black River in south central Vermont. Reuben took the freemans oath at Cavendish on 05 Jul 1788.
By 1790, REUBEN had purchased at least 105 acres of land. They continued to live in Cavendish for nearly thirty years - at least through 1818. Six more children were born here. As members of the Baptist Church in Cavendish, Reuben paid $32 for pew #11 in the gallery of this church.
Reuben purchased land from Randal Lovell for the sum of 30 pounds on March 9, 1790. The description follows: Begins at a Stake and Stones Thirty Eight Rods and two thirds of a Rod North from Michael Lovells Northeast corner thence N 74 degrees west 208 rods to a corner N 12 degrees East 23 rods and one third of a Rod to a corner thence South 74 degrees East 208 rods to Mr. Parks Land to stake and stones thence S 43 degrees west to the begun bounds and Contains 30 Acres. The deed was witnessed by Abel Bacon and Caroline Lovell.
The pioneer history of Medina County, 1861 and History of the Western Reserve credit Arvis and Cyrus for leading the family to Harrisville in 1817. Reuben with Rhoda and children Levi, Perrin, Sceva, Clyne, and Leonard started for Harrisville on 20 June 1818 from Cavendish. They arrived there in August, two months later. Part of the trip made by Cyrus and Arvis was down Lake Erie. From these accounts, it is known Reuben settled upon a farm near the village of Lodi. In 1819, he had purchsed land in Range 16 Twp 1 (Harrisville). This land was rolling and afforded a variety of soil. At the time of the arrival of the Chapman family there was only one family settled in nearby Chatham Township.
Reuben Chapman and his family settled on a tract of heavily timbered land near the present village of Lodi and here the father and his sturdy sons grappled earnestly with the wilderness, causing the same to yield tribute to their energy and indefatigable industry, so that in the course of time the giant trees of the forest gave place to productive fields.
The descendants of the Mary and John families (Rhoda was a descendant of Henry Wolcott) left a legacy of pioneering that lasted for hundreds of years. An event occurred in 1786 that prompted many of the descendants to leave their comfortable Connecticut homes, just as their ancestors left England in 1630, to settle a new territory south of the shores of Lake Erie.
Reuben spent the rest of his life here. He and Rhoda were among the first members of the Baptist church of Westfield, where Reuben was a Deacon until his death. In 1834 the society built a brick church. It was here that Reuben purchased his own pew.
The same source tells us he possessed a great mechanical ability. Reuben was credited with having an excellent voice and taught singing for a number of years.
A record of voters for the first presidential election in 1820 in this township lists Reuben. He seems to have joined in a partnership with a James Redfield and opened a small village store in 1826. The stock of goods was rather limited, yet sufficiently large for the immediate needs of early settlers. In 1834 this same James Redfield ran the first mail line under his government contract in Harrisville twice weekly.
This couple were true pioneers of the Western Reserve. Both are buried in Old Cemetery, Harrisville, OH.

SAMUEL SMITH (68045)age 57, and his wife ALMIRA, 55, in 1850 were farming in West Springfield, Hampden County, Mass. His brother LOTAN, 64 and single, was also living with them and helping on the farm. Also living there was CLARISSA ALLEN, 60, widow of Algernon Sidney Smith (Samuel's brother). Also FRANKLIN L. MOORE, 20, a farm laborer and SARAH A. LANGDIN, 20. Sarah later married Elbridge G. Smith, the son of the Algernon Smith mentioned above who was Samuel's brother. 210. JOHN8 SMITH (112) (THOMAS7, THOMAS6, THOMAS5, JOHN4, JOHN3 SMYTH, ANTHONY2, WILLIAM1). JOHN (112) was born 11 June 1757 in Feeding Hills, Hampshire, MA, USA. He married KEZIA PEASE (113), daughter of JAMES PEASE (121) and ABIGAIL FORD (122), 17 October 1782 in 1st Congregational Church, Suffield, Hartford Co., CT, USA. JOHN (112) died 3 September 1835 in Granville, Hampden Co., MA, USA, at age 78. His body was interred after 3 September 1835 in West Granville Cem., Hampden Co., MA, USA.
JOHN SMITH (112) is shown in the Springfield birth records and not in Feeding Hills where they lived. His father was THOMAS SMITH and his mother ESTHER BALL. A copy of the birth registration is in my files.
Finding the marriage record of JOHN SMITH and KEZIA PEASE was difficult as it was not in Granville where he was living or in Somers where she had been born. It turned out to be in Suffield, Connecticut where JOHN's father and grandfather had been born. It is only about ten miles from Granville to Suffield, even though Granville is in Massachusetts and Suffield is in Connecticut. . A copy of the church records of their marriage is in my files.
When we first came across the name KEZIA there was much speculation as to where it came from and how it was pronounced. I finally found it had come from the bible. KEZIA was the second daughter of JOB and is mentioned in the Book of Job Chapter 42, Verses 14 and 15.
Verse 14 "And he called the name of the first JEMIMA; and the name of the second KEZIA; and the name of the third KAREN-HAPPUCH".
Verse 15 "And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren".
The book where I found the first reference said the name means "rainbow". As the name came from the bible I assume the pronunciation would have been KEZ-EYA. I have since noticed in various records it was a fairly common name in that area at the time.
We believe JOHN SMITH may have been a miller or a clothier in Granville which was in Hampshire County, Massachusetts until 1812 when it became Hampden County. "Clothier" was the old English trade name for someone who made or finished cloth. This assumption came from the fact we know his son JOHN FORD SMITH later was a partner in a fuller mill near Granville which was a mill to finish woven cloth.
I have not found that JOHN SMITH was a member of any church but his wife KEZIA was a member of the First Church in Christ (Congregational) in East Granville and had the children baptized there. The 3rd Meeting House built in 1802 on Main Street in Granville Centre is the above church and is still being used. I attended the 4th Jubilee services in August 1995 commemorating the 200th year since Reverend Timothy Cooley became minister. In my files are photographs of the church and a brochure about the early days in Granville.
KEZIA PEASE SMITH was admitted to communion 1 December 1798 at the First Church in Christ. She was admitted as a member in 1806. Shown in the church records which can be found on L.D.S. microfilm reel #0234566. Copies of these records are in my file.
The following children were all baptized at the same time on 30 June 1799 by Reverend Timothy Cooley who was the 3rd pastor of the First Church in Christ in Granville. John Ford, Zebina, Henry, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Joseph Pease. These were found in the church records kept by Reverend Cooley and copies are in my files.
Also in my files are historic and modern maps showing Granville and the locations of the church, school and cemeteries. I tried to locate the property where the Smith family lived. Unfortunately there were 4 John Smith families in Granville at the time and there is still confusion as to where each family owned land. In my files are many copies of deeds still to be sorted out.
JOHN SMITH served as a Private in Captain William Cooley's Company, Colonel John Mosely's Regiment, from 23 September 1776 to 7 November 1776 including 140 miles of travel. He then served as Sergeant in the same Company and Regiment from 9 July 1777 to 26 July 1777 including 100 miles of travel to reinforce the Northern Army. These records were taken from Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War and copies of the pertinent pages are in my files.
In a book called Connecticut Revolutionary Pensioners it lists JOHN SMITH with pension file number S 29468. He applied for his pension 8 August 1832 while he was living in Granville. I received photocopies of his pension file from Washington and these are in my files. Between May 1775 and July 1780, in 5 separate enlistments, he served a total of 2 years and 5 months. He was not in any major battles but on one assignment was at Fishkill, Massachusetts and on another was at Elizabethtown in New Jersey. The Legislation granting pensions was not passed until 1832. His pension amounted to 50 dollars and 66 cents per annum. As he died in 1835 he did not have much benefit for his services.
The Smith family show in the 1st United States Census in 1790 as living in Granville with 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16 and 1 female over 16. By the 1800 Census they show as 3 males under 10, 1 male over 16 but under 26, 1 male under 45 and 1 female under 45.
KEZIA PEASE SMITH and the oldest son JOHN FORD SMITH are buried in the West Granville Cemetery. Photographs of their tombstones taken in 1995 are in my files. There is no stone for JOHN SMITH but the burying records for West Granville Cemetery show him as being buried there with no marker. Copies of these records are in my file.
JOHN FORD SMITH, the oldest son of JOHN and KEZIA SMITH, served as a Captain in the Fourth Division, Fourth Regiment, First Brigade of the Massachusetts State Troops in 1812. This was at the same time as HENRY SMITH, his younger brother, was serving as a Gunner in the Lincoln Artillery Militia in Canada. So this is a case of two brothers fighting on opposite sides in the 1812 war. We will learn much more about HENRY SMITH in the notes on the next generation.
I spent a tremendous amount of time researching in Granville to determine what land JOHN SMITH owned (if any). Naturally I was interested where HENRY SMITH, my g-g-grandfather lived when he was a boy growing up in Granville. I uncovered a great number of deeds with the help of Henry Miller, the local historian. The main problem was the number of JOHN SMITHS who were living in the area at the time. There were actually four in this same time frame. I finally eliminated the other three JOHN SMITHS for various reasons and came down to JOHN SMITH of Granville who lost all his land and half his house when his creditors foreclosed. This was in 1784 and from the timing is most likely "our" JOHN SMITH who would have been 27 years old and just married in 1782. This JOHN SMITH was shown as a yeoman (farmer) and the property was on the west side of Mill Brook. The court deed when the creditors took all JOHN's land and half of his house, is very unusual but interesting. They actually surveyed right through the centre of the house from the chimney to the kitchen. How they sorted this out is hard to understand but the court records show exactly what the creditors took in payment for a debt that was no more than £27. The details are in a photocopy of the court records which are in my files.
JOHN SMITH disappeared from the 1810 Hampden County Census records. They were still only showing Heads of Households so I thought maybe he and his wife KEZIA had gone to live with their oldest son JOHN FORD SMITH. He had purchased property in Tolland just across the Granville west boundary line. To add some strength to this idea we know that KEZIA and JOHN as well as their son JOHN FORD SMITH are all buried in the West Granville Cemetery which is close to the Tolland line. This seemed strange when KEZIA had been a member of the First Congregational Church in Christ in East Granville church and had the children baptized there but if they were living with JOHN FORD SMITH in Tolland it would be the closest cemetery.
JOHN FORD SMITH as early as 1808 purchased a half interest in a Fulling Mill on the Hubbard River on the road to Hartland. This road has since been closed off but Henry Miller kindly showed me how to get to the old mill foundations. JOHN FORD SMITH was only 21 so where would he get the money to make this purchase? Was his father involved somehow but could not show on the ownership because of his previous debt problems with his house? JOHN FORD SMITH sold this same property 4 years later in 1812. Then in 1820, 1823 and 1827 JOHN FORD SMITH sold land in Tolland but I could never find any purchase deeds for these properties. Finally in 1828/9 he lost some of this property in a judgement against him in the courts. At the time of his death in 1854 his estate papers showed he held 106 acres as well as a homestead and other buildings but I have not determined where this was located.
The SMITHS evidently did not believe in wills. JOHN FORD SMITH, his father JOHN SMITH and his grandfather THOMAS SMITH all died intestate. When HENRY SMITH left for Canada between 1808 and 1810, was there a rift in the family or was he just looking for land and a better start? If the eldest son JOHN FORD SMITH was given any advantage when he purchased the Fulling Mill in 1808 this may have been the final straw that sent HENRY on his way. There may have been some political reasons as well. JOHN SMITH (the father) had been in the militia in the Revolutionary War and JOHN FORD SMITH was in the regular Massachusetts Army in 1812 which shows his leanings. Finally there could have been religious differences. KEZIA was a member of the Congregational Church but I never found where JOHN SMITH ever joined the church. When HENRY arrived in Canada he quickly became a Wesleyan Methodist. So there could have been many differences in the family with a younger son not having any chance to inherit land.

SMITH GENEALOGY by George Lee Smith of Detroit, Michigan. 1952 This is a hand written very small file on "our" branch of the Smith Family and was the sole means of a breakthrough to the ancestors of JOHN SMITH. I have since traced this GEORGE LEE SMITH and found he was born in 1906 and married 4 May 1940 to DAISY MAUD RANDLE in Mount Morris, Michigan. They had a daughter AMELIA JANE SMITH born 21 October 1943 in Detroit. A copy of this folder is in my files. The original is held by the Kent Memorial Library in Suffield, Connecticut.

There was no actual marriage record shown but the record of their children is in the Town Clerk's files. I have been unable to find the parent's of Huldah Smith.

ELIZABETH SMITH (68029) daughter of William Smith and Huldah Smith "may" have married on 10 January 1849 in Springfield to John A. Wilson. However this is probably not our Elizabeth Smith as this record in the Mass. Vital Records does not show any details of the people being married and not their parents. This is very unusual and this minister must have been marrying anybody who came along. He was Rev. Mark Trafton and I have never seen a record without these details before for a whole group of individuals.
537 iv. HULDAH SMITH (68032). HULDAH (68032) was born 6 December 1809. HULDAH (68032) died 28 October 1843 in West Springfield, Hampden Co., MA, USA, at age 33.
HULDAH SMITH (68032) and RICHARD DEWEY filed their intention to marry on 16 December 1826 with the Town Clerk at West Springfield, Hampden County, Mass. However there was never an actual marriage recorded and I can't find any children. Huldah died in 1843 and by the 1850 census Richard Dewey is shown married to someone else so I have not shown any marriage for Huldah Smith.

LOVICY SMITH (68033) birth date is recorded in the Mass. Vital Records to 1850 from the Town of West Springfield, Hampden County, Mass. They show the birth of LOVICY SMITH on 31 December 1818, daughter of William Smith and Huldah Smith. There is a note written into the file stating LOVICY SMITH married S. AUGUSTUS UPSON. However there is no official entry by the Town Clerk for either an intention of marriage or an actual marriage. He was from Granby and the 1850 census shows him married to someone else so I am not connecting him to Lovicy Smith. I also could not find a death date for her.

JUBA SMITH (67927) moved to Franklin, New York, about 1800. He later moved to Springfield, Bradford County, Pa. where he died. He married and had children but we have no details.

In 1830 JUBA SMITH and his wife whose name we don't know, were farming inSpringfiled Township, Bradford County, PA. They had 1 son under 5, 1 son 5-10 and 1 son 20-30. they had 1 daughter 10-15 and another daughter 20-30. From the Bradford County, Pa. 1830 census.
By 1840 JUBA SMITH and his wife were still farming in Bradford County, Pa. but some of the children had married and left home. The 2 younger sons were still living at home but the the older son and both daughters must have married. From the Bradfords County, Pa. 1840 census.
Unfortunately JUBA SMITH does not appear anywhere in the 1850 census so we have no way of finding the names of the children or his wife. He must have died before 1850.
