He married ANNE JENKS (68054) 25 December 1703 in Boxford, Essex, MA, USA. He married ABIGAIL CLARK (widow Lyons) (70161) 17 July 1718 in Woodstock, Windham, CT, USA. WILLIAM (68052) died after 6 February 1753 at age at an unknown age.

WILLIAM CHAPMAN (68052) is believed to have moved out to Connecticut after his wife ANN JENKS died. His mother, ELIZABETH SMITH and father, WILLIAM CHAPMAN, had already emigrated to Connecticut as well as his uncle THOMAS SMITH. We don't know the date he departed Massachusetts and whether his 3 children left with him. They all appear to have been married in Massachusetts. Elizabeth in 1725, Jane in 1729 and Philip in 1741.

       William participated in the formation of a church in Ashford, CT. This was in 1718. He bought land in the Stoddard tract of Ashford in 1718. 4 Nov 1718 William Chapman of Woodstock, husbandman, bought 30A on Mt. Hope River near Ashford.

      William was considered a senior brother of the church in Ashford. The last land records involving William were dated 6 Feb 1753 in Ashford when he deeded his land to his step-son, Noah Lyon. He had deeded the rest of this property to his step-daughter, Abigail Lyon on 18 Nov 1745.

    WILLIAM's second marriage was to Abigail Clark, (widow Lyon) in Woodstock, Connecticut in 1718. When I can check the Connecticut vital statistics the above situation may need changing.

    Family tradition says William was by trade a weaver and also a tavern keeper. The tavern on the stage route to Hartford was closed in the winter months and William and family moved to one of the nearby towns, which explains the various places of birth of the children.

JOHN KIMBALL Cpl. (70160)married ELIZABETH CHAPMAN on 5 December 1704 in Boxford, Essex County, Massachusetts.

       Residence of Lucy S Kimball. - The farm on which the late Moses Kimball resided was settled in the seventeenth century. Near his house, a little to the southeast, the foundation of an old chimney was unearthed several years ago. There stood the residence of John Kimball, who settled in Boxford as early as 1669. He made his will in 1718, ana it was proved in 121. In it he gave this place to his son John, entailed to Johns children. Corporal Kimball, by his wife Sarah, had seven children, two sons and five daughters. Miss Lucy S Kimball, the present owner, writes that the next house that was built on this place stood on the opposite side of the road, a little to the southwest. Mr. Kimball’s son John, took up his residence on the farm. He was born in 1685, married Elizabeth Chapman in 1705, and had one son and six daughters. He died in 1763, aged seventy-eight.

49. THOMAS⁶ SMITH (1512) (THOMAS⁵, JOHN⁴, JOHN³ SMYTH, ANTHONY², WILLIAM¹). THOMAS (1512) was born 26 July 1690 in Suffield, Hartford, MA changed in 1749 to CT, USA. He married ABIGAIL AUSTIN (1513), daughter of ANTHONY AUSTIN JR. ENSIGN (1534) and ABIGAIL HOLCOMBE (1535), 10 August 1724 in First Congregational Church, Suffield, Hartford Co., CT, USA. THOMAS (1512) died 1759 in Suffield, Hartford Co., CT, USA, at age at an unknown age.

THOMAS SMITH (1512) was born in Suffield, Massachusetts on 26 August 1690. This area became Hartford County, Connecticut in 1749. His father was THOMAS SMITH and his mother was MARY YOUNGLOVE. Probably he was born in the house his father owned at the time. It was located at the southwest corner of High Street (now North Street) and "the road to Westfield" (now called Halladay Avenue West. His father was one of the very early settlers to arrive in Suffield from Ipswich, Massachusetts and his mother was the daughter of the first minister in Suffield.

     THOMAS SMITH was allotted 12 acres in Suffield by the Town Council Meeting 19 June 1710. This shows they recognized him as the son of one of the first settlers. This is taken from the Suffield Town Records Volume 1 Page 175. You are allowed to view these old record books but cannot photocopy them. In my file is a description of the above property hand copied from the original

Suffield Town Record Book. I have since found that LDS microfilmed this "Old Book" and it can be viewed on film # 0005706. However many of the pages are illegible. Photocopies of some of the pages are in my files. His property was located on both sides of the "Road to Westfield" (this section is now called Spruce Street once you get west of Hastings (Russell) Hill. It was just east of Muddy Brook. The road had evidently been relocated at some time and that is why it ran through Thomas Smith's land.

     THOMAS SMITH wa a "Husbandman" or in other words a cattle herder. He probably used this property for his cattle and maybe for growing hay. There is no evidence he ever lived here. THOMAS sold this land to Nathaniel Warner in 1726. This is shown in Hampshire County Deed Book "E" Page 49. Historic and modern maps as well as a computer print-out are in my files.

     THOMAS married ABIGAIL AUSTIN at the First Congregational Church in Suffield on 10 August 1724. She was the daughter of Anthony Austin Jr.

     He was allotted another 24 acres at the Town Council Meeting 8 December 1710. This is shown in Suffield Town Records Volume 1 Page 176 where he is referred to as Sergeant Thomas Smith. In my file is a description of this property hand copied from the original book.

     The above property was located on the southwest side of "The Road to Westfield" (now called Halladay Avenue West). It was just west of Bush's Hill "at the curve of the road". This road was sometimes called "The Road to Bush's Bridge" which was the bridge over Fyler's Brook a short distance to the west.

     In 1730 THOMAS sold the above land and evidently this was where he had been living as a house was involved in the sale. He sold to Nathaniel Warner for £120. This comes from the Hampshire County Deed Book "E" Page 438. Historic and modern maps as well as a computer print-out are in my files showing the location. Also there is a photograph taken in 1996 of a very old house on this property. It has been renovated but I could not contact anybody to find out the actual age of the house.

     At the Suffield Town Meeting 9 March 1723/4 THOMAS SMITH JR. was appointed "fence viewer".

     In the Suffield Town Records Volume 2 Page 81 it shows that THOMAS SMITH JR. was granted 4 acres of land which would complete his 40 acre allotment. It was located in the meadow immediately southwest of the 24 acres discussed above.

     THOMAS SMITH sold this 4 acres of land to Joseph Fuller. Copy of the deed in my file is dated 3 May 1721 recorded 10 March 1724/5. It is taken from Hampshire County Deed Book "D" Pages 457-8. All land records for Suffield before 1749 are held by the Land Registry Office at Springfield, Massachusetts. The exception to this are the actual Suffield Town Meeting Records where they allotted original land grants. These records are held by the Town Clerk's Office in Suffield.

     THOMAS sold 8 acres located in Suffield to Jacob Hathaway. Copy of the deed in my file is dated April 1725 recorded 6 August 1731. It is taken from Hampshire County Deed Book "F" Pages 54-5.

     THOMAS SMITH renewed his baptismal covenant at the first Congregational Church of Suffield on 3 October 1725 Shown on Page 34 of the church records. His wife ABIGAIL AUSTIN SMITH renewed her baptismal covenant on 27 August 1727. shown on page 8 in the church records. Copies of these pages are in my files.

     THOMAS SMITH died in Suffield in 1759 but his wife ABIGAIL lived on for many years. She died 14 November 1799 at the age of 98. After THOMAS died she had been living with her son Thomas and his wife Esther Ball in Feeding Hills, Hampden County, Massachusetts. She is buried in West Springfield but it is not known where Thomas is buried.

     In reviewing the date of 1730 when THOMAS sold the last of his property in Suffield it makes me wonder whether he didn't move the family out of Suffield. Mrs. Delphinia Clarke in her records held by the Kent Memorial Library in Suffield, makes a statement that after that sale nothing further is heard of the THOMAS SMITH family in Suffield. She thought "the sons had married Springfield girls". She was correct that THOMAS married Esther Ball of Springfield. He later sold 3 lots in Springfield. Could these have been purchased by THOMAS SMITH and received by THOMAS SMITH when his father died ? Maybe THOMAS SMITH did not die in Suffield but in Springfield. This needs more research.

In Connecticut they have a state law which requires a person to be a member of a Connecticut Genealogical Society before you can view birth records.

      RECORDS OF DELPHINIA CLARKE This is an amazing collection of 6 large folios which Mrs. Delphinia Clarke produced by hand in the mid 1900's. She took each piece of land in Suffield and typed up the original land grant from the town. Then she followed every land transaction for that piece of land as it was resold and divided and recorded all these deeds up to the 1900's. She included some history about the people and many times showed who they married and named their children. She included bits of news about some of them and whether they departed to other towns. Then to top this off she made sketch maps showing the locations of the properties and how they fieed together. This collection is held by the Kent Memorial Library in Suffield, Connecticut. I took photocopies of many of the pertinent pages concerning the SMITHS and AUSTINS.

       Ezekiel Collins and Rebecca sold land in Lynn to Henry Silsbee Nov 4, 1724. On 10 May 1727 they sold land to Samuel Graves that adjoined Samuel's land and on 22 Mar 1728/9 they sold land to Crispus Graves. Apr 51 1731. They sold to Nathaniel Collins a tract of land originally laid out to Joseph Collins in 1728/9.

       Ezekiel Collins gave a bridle path through property of his, and his son William, and Mr. Phillips, promising to maintain it as a good highway to the Meeting House, in exchange for 2 acres of land in spruce Swamp. From Property Town Records, 1727-1868, Southborough, Ma.

In it is, in the third generation: Ezekiel Collins of Lynn bought of Thomas Bellows of Southborough, housewright, for fifty pounds, about 13 acres of land in Southborough... 1745 he bought land in Westborough for 400 pounds, and in 1750 he sold land in that town to William Upham for 600 pounds and he and Rebekah signed the deed. In 1765 Ezekiel ...deeds to Mark Collins...land with dwelling house on same where said Ezekiel and Mark now dwell," and Rebekah's signature as well as his own is affixed to the deed...
