28. JOHN5 SMITH JR. (1538) (JOHN4, JOHN3 SMYTH, ANTHONY2, WILLIAM1). JOHN (1538) was born 29 October 1654 in Ipswich, Essex, MA, USA. He married ELIZABETH SMITH (1547), daughter of GEORGE SMITH (61112) and MARY FRENCH (61113), 13 November 1678 in Ipswich, Essex, MA, USA. JOHN (1538) died 28 April 1737 in Ipswich, Essex, MA, USA, at age 82.

JOHN SMITH JR. (1538)was the son of JOHN SMITH (1622-1672) and Elizabeth whose maiden name we have never been able to determine. All the information from this JOHN SMITH JR. down to the present day in his line, was kindly sent to me by two Smith cousins, Jimmy and Ron Smith who have done an excellent job in tracing this line. JOHN SMITH is the brother of "our" THOMAS SMITH who left Ipswich and ended up in Suffield, Connecticut.

29. ELIZABETH5 SMITH (1539) (JOHN4, JOHN3 SMYTH, ANTHONY2, WILLIAM1). ELIZABETH (1539) was born circa 1656 in Ipswich, Essex, MA, USA. She married WILLIAM CHAPMAN (1548) 30 March 1682 in Ipswich, Essex, MA, USA. ELIZABETH (1539) died after 1732 in Ashford, Windham, CT, USA, at age at an unknown age.

WILLIAM CHAPMAN (1548). WILLIAM (1548) was born between 1651 and 1656. WILLIAM (1548) died after 1732 in Ashford, Windham, CT, USA, at age at an unknown age.

WILLIAM CHAPMAN (1548) was probably born in the early 1650's. Nothing is known of his parents. It is conjectured his birthplace was England although New England has not been completely ruled out. It is not known if he was indentured as a servant for passage to America or as a minor between 1670-71

If he was an immigrant it is possible that one Daniel Hovey. Jr. may have been his master in March 1678 at which time his period of indenture was extended by one year. Hovey paid a fine for him at this time. In November of that year he took the Oath of Allegiance to King Charles II, an oath which was required of all males over age 16. See the Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts, Essex County, Massachusetts, Vol VII

The Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County. Massachusetts, Vol V1 P 425 show one Ephraim Fellows complaining that Wm. Chapman had spoiled a cow of his appraised at 4__. The court ordered that said Chapman serve Daniell Hovey one year after his time is out, said Hovey having paid Fellows for it.

On 28 Mar 1682 William Chapman and Elizabeth Smith were found guilty of fornication, He had to give security or marry her and. they were to be whipped or pay a fine.

Source - Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex Co., MA, vol VIII, 1680-1683, p279.

It appears that William was a freeman for had he still been Hovey's servant, Hovey would have been mentioned in the fornication conviction and would have been liable for the fine.

By March 30, 1682 this indenture must have been satisfied as he married Elizabeth Smith. She was the daughter of John Smith, who as tenant of Mr. Appleton, had a share in Plum Island, MA in 1664. John Smith had become a commoner in 1707. They were married in Ipswich, MA.

A William Chapman was included in a list of bonds held by the estate of Joseph Parker of Ipswich in 1685. (Ibid. Vol IX p. 575) According to the Town Rate Tax List of October 30, 1687 under Gov. Andros, William owned no land or house and paid only two shillings tax on one cow and two sheep at Topsfield.

It is believed that William Chapman did not have the advantages of being a Freeman of this colony. The oath of fidelity to the Colony was required of all who served in any capacity, and at certain periods all desirable residents were required to take the oath. But such persons were not made freemen by taking that Oath. The Freeman of the Company was virtually what we today would call a shareholder, a member of the corporation chartered in 1629.

Sometime between 1684 and 1687 William Chapman and his wife

Elizabeth Smith appeared in Topsfield. MA where they were admitted to the First Church (Congregational) there. 0n March 21, 1703 they were baptized in this church. At its inception about 1639, this town was called New Meadows. The History of Topsfield. Massachusetts by George Francis Dow tells us that the records of the Congregational Church in Topsfield begin with the ordination of Rev. Joseph Capen in 1684. He included Wm and Elizabeth in his list of members which he recorded during his years at Topsfield Church. According to a statement in his History, p 271 on March 21, 1703 they were baptized in this church.

William and Elizabeth appear on the church list of Boxford, MA Church in 1704. According to the Historical Collections of every town in Massachusetts by Barber the Rev. Symmes was the pastor or the First Congregational church in 1702 during the period of time our subjects would have lived there.

The land boundaries between Boxford and Topsfield were not established until 25 Feb 1701 and further on 28 Nov 1707. The Boxford Records show the following:

Province tax 1714 William Chapman 00 17 08

Province tax 1718 William Chapman 00 12 04

Minister's Rate 1715 William Chapman 00 11 09

Town Rate 1715 William Chapman 5+

Town Rate 1715/6 William Chapman 00 03 02

It is known that on 21 April 1718 William took a mortgage with the Stoddards for property in Ashford, CT. His sons William and John had also purchased land in Stoddard's Tract there. William and Elizabeth signed the deeds with an X.

As husbandman of Ashford, William sold this property on 09 Jan 1732/33 to David Smith (now husband of Mrs. Mehitable (nee Presson) Chubb yeoman of Ashford for four hundred pounds.(Mehitable was mother to Dorcas who married Jonathan Chapman. son of William Jr.). This consisted of 80 acres including one house and one barn. William and Elizabeth were probably in their late 60's or early 70's.

Nothing more is known of this couple at this time. Did they remain here until their death or did they move back to MA and live: with their daughters ?

The two sons and their families moved to Connecticut at the same time their parents did. It is believed Ann Chapman Clifford stayed in Massachusetts with her family as did her sister Elizabeth Chapman Kimball.

31. THOMAS5 SMITH (1522) (JOHN4, JOHN3 SMYTH, ANTHONY2, WILLIAM1). THOMAS (1522) was born 7 June 1661 in Ipswich, Essex, MA, USA. He married JOANNA BARBER (1523), daughter of JOHN BARBER (2654) and BATHSHEBA COGGINS (2655), 18 March 1684/85 in Suffield, Hartford, MA changed in 1749 to CT, USA. He married MARY YOUNGLOVE (1526), daughter of JOHN YOUNGLOVE (1620) and SARAH HADDON (1649), 2 December 1689 in Suffield, Hartford, MA changed in 1749 to CT, USA. THOMAS (1522) died 2 December 1726 in Suffield, Hartford, MA changed in 1749 to CT, USA, at age 65.

THOMAS SMITH (1522) was born on 7 June 1661 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. His father was JOHN SMITH and his mother was ELIZABETH but her family name is unknown.

THOMAS SMITH must have moved from Ipswich to Suffield, Massachusetts (changed to Connecticut in 1749) approximately 1680/1. The town of Suffield was first inhabited by settlers in 1671. It was originally called Stoney River. However 1n 1675 some northern Indians led by "King Philip" raided several of the towns in the area and burned the houses and the crops of the settlers. Suffield was one of those burned and the settlers fled and abandoned the town. Nobody returned until it was thought safe in 1678/9. In 1680 the Commissioners for the Massachusetts Bay Colony Company turned the town over to a Town Council. That must have been about the time THOMAS SMITH arrived as he was granted land at the second meeting of the Town Council.

THOMAS SMITH was granted 40 acres of free land in Suffield as a "home lot". He had been added to the original list of "inhabitants" who had been allotted free land by the Town Council. This was at the Second Town Meeting 17 November 1682. It is shown in volume 1 page 69 of the Suffield Town Meeting minutes. These old original records are held by the Town Clerk's Office in Suffield. They can be viewed but not photocopied in order to preserve the old paper. I have since found that LDS microfilmed the "Old Book" on film # 0005706. However many pages are illegible. Photocopies of a few of these pages are in my files.

The description of this 40 acres is in my file, hand copied from the above records. It was located at the southwest corner of High Street (now called North Street) and the "Road to Westfield" (now called Halladay Avenue West). It was 12 rods wide facing High Street and 106 rods long running back to Clay Brook. Historic and modern maps as well as a computer print-out are in my files showing this location.

THOMAS SMITH was a Tanner by trade. At a Town Meeting 29 April 1686 THOMAS was given a further allotment in Suffield to compensate for part of his original land which had been expropriated and used for the new highway. This is shown in Suffield Town Meeting minutes volume 1 page 35. A description of this property is in my files. It was an "arpent" of land which evidently was 5/6 of an acre. This is also shown on the above maps.

THOMAS SMITH married JOANNA BARBER 18 March 1684/5. They were married by Governor John Pynchon who was the Governor of Hampshire County, Massachusetts at the time. They had their first child, JOHN, on 18 June 1688. Tragically Joanna died a week later. He then married MARY YOUNGLOVE who was the daughter of the first minister to serve in Suffield, John Younglove. He had been granted land and a house to encourage him to come to Suffield from Hadley, Massachusetts. In 1680 the Town Council had voted land for the first Meeting House.

The minutes of the Town Meetings are extremely interesting and informative. They record in exact detail what was happening in the town from when it was officially formed. It gives the voting for the first and subsequent Meeting Houses including their actual size and construction. The minutes detail the first school building and the appointment of the schoolmaster. Also the granting of land and a house to the first minister, John Younglove. These minutes are available for viewing only at the Town Clerk's Office in Suffield. However they are also well documented in an excellent book called The History of Suffield by Hezekiah Spencer Sheldon published in 1876. This book was reprinted in 1994 by Higginson Books, Salem, Massachusetts. and this book is in my library.

At another Town Meeting on 27 March 1688 THOMAS received a further allotment of 26 acres located in Suffield. This is shown in the Town Records volume 1 page 43. A description of this land is in my file. Unfortunately the description doesn't give many clues as to the location. It mentions "the path to Taylor's Field" so on the map I have placed it on the south side of Russell Street (originally called the road to the Common) and just west of Clay Brook. This was meadow land granted and THOMAS SMITH never lived on this land.

THOMAS sold the above land to Abraham Adams "for a consideration already received". A copy of this deed is in my files dated 5 February 1718/9 recorded 2 February 1721/2. Taken from Hampshire County Deed Book "D" pages 72/3. The historic and modern map as well as a computer print-out in my files will show the location I have chosen.

It is interesting to speculate why THOMAS SMITH should sell the above property and then buy other land and a house not too far away. A clue may lie in the deed. It doesn't state the selling price but it says "for a consideration already received". This looks to me as though THOMAS had a loan from Abraham Adams and finally let the house and lot go in lieu of paying off the debt. He ended up buying a house and 12 acres for £25. Then a few years later he mortgaged this to John Pynchon for £25 so I assume he was short of cash. Another consideration in selling the other property might have been his trade of "tanner". The first house was right on High Street (now North Street) which was the main street running through town. A tannery is a mighty smelly operation and maybe he wasn't too popular in that location.

He was appointed Constable of Suffield at the Town Meeting on 1 March 1691/2. And at the meeting of 2 May 1692 it was agreed that "THOMAS SMITH should have full liberty to peele barke on ye Commons for the use of his trade". (Tanner).

At a Town Meeting on 13 December 1699 THOMAS SMITH was appointed as one of the first surveyors for the Town of Suffield. At the Suffield Town Meeting on 2 March 1690/1 THOMAS SMITH was chosen as one of the "assessors" and at the meeting on 4 March 1700 he was again appointed as "surveyor".

THOMAS SMITH purchased 12 acres for £25 from Thomas Cooper. Copy of this deed in my file is dated 11 January 1688/9 recorded 18 March 1692/3. This was taken from Hampshire County Deed Book "A-B" pages 84-5. This deed book is the very first record of land transactions in Hampshire County, Massachusetts. It is held in the Land Transfer Office in Springfield but because of its rarity and value it is not found on the open shelves. It is kept in the Director's Office and can be viewed on request. Amazingly they allowed me to have photocopies made (under their supervision).

The above property was located on Crooked Lane (now called Mapleton Avenue). Here again the description in the deed mentions the Road to Springfield and the Road to Westfield. So I believe it was at the intersection of what is now Mapleton Avenue and Halladay Avenue East. The maps and computer print-out in my files show this location. THOMAS SMITH mortgaged this property which contained a house, to John Pynchon. It is shown in Hampshire County Deed Book "D" pages 334/5 dated 13 February 1723/4 recorded 25 February 1723/4.

CORPORAL THOMAS SMITH was elected as one of the 5 Selectmen of Suffield at the Town Meeting on 5 March 1701/2. Also at the Town Meeting on 8 March 1707/8 he was again elected Selectman. He was elected Selectman still again at the Town Meeting on 9 March 1712/3. In 1714/5 he was appointed "Tythingman".

THOMAS SMITH was dismissed from the First Church of Westfield in 1702 and his wife MARY YOUNGLOVE in 1710. There is no sinister meaning to the word dismissed. It only means they were given permission to leave the Westfield Church and join the Suffield Church. They were both Congregational Churches.

MARY YOUNGLOVE SMITH was admitted to the membership of the Congregational Church in Suffield on 14 January 1710 by the Reverend Ebenezer Devotion. THOMAS SMITH and his wife renewed their Baptismal Covenant on 3 October 1725. . Shown in the records of the Congregational Church in Suffield. Copies of page 1 and 17 are in my files.

The Town Meeting of 2 April 1713 granted THOMAS a further 7½ acres along with a number of other men. Again at the Town Meeting on 3 January 1715/6 he was allotted another 11 1/2 acres. However these were all annulled by the County Court on 10 January 1716. There were dissenters at these meetings who claimed the meetings were not legally constituted for allotting land and they had filed a dissenting vote. For further details see pages 192-3-4 of The History of Suffield by Hezakiah Spencer Sheldon. A copy of this book is in my library.

THOMAS SMITH sold his "home" lot in Suffield to Samuel Dwight. Copy of this deed in my file is dated 19 January 1722/3 recorded 31 January 1722/3. Taken from Hampshire County Deed Book "D" page 183. This was the property at the southwest corner of High Street (now North Street) and the Road to Westfield (now Halladay Avenue West).

When THOMAS SMITH died in 1759 there existed the Old Centre Cemetery behind the First Congregational Church in Suffield. Unfortunately when they built the new church, the old cemetery was moved back to make room for the larger church and many of the old gravestones were broken and lost. Whether THOMAS SMITH had a gravestone or whether he was even buried there, we don't know. However in my files are photographs taken in 1995 of the old cemetery. His wife MARY YOUNGLOVE lived until 24 June 1743.

RECORDS of DELPHINIA CLARKE This is an amazing collection of 6 large folios which Mrs. Delphinia Clarke produced by hand in the mid 1900s. She took each piece of land in Suffield and typed up the original land grant from the town. Then she traced every land transaction for that piece of land as it was resold and divided and recorded all these deeds up to the 1900s. She included some history about the people and many times showed who they married and named their children. She included bits of news about some of them and whether they departed to other towns. Then to top this off she made sketch maps showing the locations of the properties and how they fitted together. This collection is held by the Kent Memorial Library in Suffield, Connecticut. I took photocopies of many of the pertinent pages concerning the SMITHS and AUSTINS.

    MARRIAGE REGISTRATION

JOSEPH COLLINS, 42, widower, housewright of Lynn, s/o Henry Collins and Ann, married on 15 October 1684 in Lynn, MARIAH SMITH, spinster of Ipswich, d/o John Smith and Elizabeth.

Mass. vital Records to 1850. Town Records of Lynn, Mass.

In connection with the first marriage of JOSEPH COLLINS to SARAH and their children, DOROTHY born 6 March 1675/6, SARAH born 1 August 1678 and ESTER born 2 January 1679, some researchers have connected this SARAH to SARAH SILBY, daughter of JONATHAN SILBY and BATHIAH. However the Lynn Town Records shows that their daughter SARAH was born 5 December 1674 which would make it impossible to be the wife of Joseph Collins. However sometimes these town clerk records show a baptismal date and not a birth date. There are many cases of children being baptized as adults and especially just before they were married. So this SARAH SILBY as the first wife of JOSEPH COLLINS, should be treated as suspect unless further proof is found.

JOSEPH COLLINS served in King Philip's War, being credited with one pound, ten shillings, on 24 June 1676, for service under Capt. Nicholas Manning.

On 4 June 1685, he was one of 25 soldiers from Lynn who petitioned the General Court for land promised them for service in Nipmugg country and at the Narragansett Fort.

On June 4th 1685 a petition was presented to the Gen court in session at Boston for the grant of land which had been promised in 1675, "...if they played the man, took the Narragansett fort, and drove the enemy out of the Narragansett country, which is their great seat, they should gave a gratuity of land, besides their wages." Joseph Collins's name was affixed to this petition.
