       IMPORTANT NOTICE

      There is no written proof that ANTHONY SMYTH is the father of "our" JOHN SMYTH. In the Hadleigh Parish Church there were 5 JOHN SMYTHS baptized between 1590 and 1600. This is the probable time frame for the birth of JOHN SMYTH who married ALICE MARRYON (BARNES) in 1619. At that time the church register never showed the mother's name in baptism records. In fact earlier in the 1500s it didn't show the father's name in many cases.

     The 5 choices for the baptism of JOHN SMYTH are

1592 May 15 John son of JOSEPH

1592 December 29 John son of John

1593 June 11 John son of Anthony

1594 March 30 John son of John

1596 April 24 John son of John of Nayland

     The reasoning for connecting this ANTHONY SMYTH as a father to JOHN SMYTH is the presence of twins in this family. "Our" JOHN SMITH had a set of twins born in Ipswich, Massachusetts, USA on 11 June 1670. His son THOMAS SMITH had twins and they were born in Suffield, Connecticut on 5 February 1701. So this definitely disproves the common belief that twins ALWAYS skip a generation. I know in the case of JOHN SMITH and THOMAS SMITH the information is correct as these were birth records shown in the Town records of Ipswich and Suffield.

     Looking the other way to ANTHONY SMYTH, the presumed father of JOHN SMITH, we find he and his wife ROSE had two sets of twins. ANTHONY was not a twin himself. His son THOMAS and wife ELIZABETH had a set of twins so in this case again it didn't skip a generation.

     Going back still further to ANTHONY SMYTH's father WILLIAM SMYTH, we find he and his wife ELIZABETH MUDD had 3 sets of twins !! ANTHONY was not a twin himself so when his son JOHN SMYTH was a twin it skipped a generation. The twins in WILLIAM's family were all females except ABRAHAM who died at birth. Surely all these twins in subsequent SMITH families must mean there is a gene descending through the male line.

     In reading about twins I found the death rate of a twin at birth is extremely high. This is especially so for the second twin born because of lack of oxygen before the second twin can be delivered. Even if twins both survive at birth their death rate is much higher in infancy than a single birth. If you look at the death dates for all the SMYTH twins you will find this high death rate is clearly shown. So without any other proof available I am using this "genes" theory to make the family connections between ANTHONY SMYTH and JOHN SMITH.

     All of the children of ANTHONY SMYTH and ROSE HOWARD were baptized in St. Mary's, the Parish Church of Hadleigh, Suffolk County, England. They are all shown in the original register which still exists and photocopies are in my files.

     JOHN SMYTH was born 11 June 1593 in Hadleigh, Suffolk County, England. (Twin) and died on 5 September 1624 in Great Waldingfield, Suffolk County, England. JOHN and his twin brother WILLIAM both died in the same year of 1624. The plague was very bad in Suffolk that year so that is very probably the cause of their deaths.

     WILLIAM SMYTH was born in Hadleigh, Suffolk County, England on 11 June 1593. (Twin) and died on 13 January 1624 in Hadleigh, Suffolk County, England, at age 30. He married ALICE WOLWARD (widow) in 1616 in Hadleigh, Suffolk County, England. WILLIAM SMITH was a beer brewer in Hadleigh, Suffolk County, England. His will was dated 13 January 1624 proved 3 February 1626. It connects him to his wife ALICE, THOMAS SMITH son of his brother THOMAS SMITH, deceased, and others in Hadleigh. Copy of his will is in my files. It was shown in a book called GENEALOGICAL GLEANINGS in ENGLAND by Henry F. Waters. first published in 1907 and republished in 1981 by Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore.
